The Spanish language
Spanish, also known as Castilian, belongs to the Romance languages and is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Almost 500 million people speak Spanish as their mother tongue.
In Spanish-speaking countries, the terms español and castellano are used in parallel for standardised Spanish. In non-Spanish-speaking countries, however, the language is almost exclusively referred to as „Spanish“.
Spanish is the official language in 21 countries, mainly in Spain and Latin America. There are many regional dialects and variants of Spanish. Even within Spain there are various official regional languages: Galician (gallego) is spoken in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula, Catalan (catalán) is the official regional language in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Valencia, and Basque (vasco) is spoken in the Basque Country.

However, there are also differences between the Spanish spoken in Spain and that used in Mexico or other Latin American countries.
The differences mainly concern colloquial language and terms used in everyday life. In technical documents or other specialised translations in the fields of science, finance, law and pharmaceuticals, such as those often translated by Proverb translators in the language combinations German-Spanish or English-Spanish, there are hardly any differences.
In spoken Spanish, however, there are hardly any communication problems between Spaniards and people from Latin America with Spanish as their mother tongue.
German-Spanish relations
Spain is an important bilateral and multilateral partner for Germany, and political dialogue is close and based on trust. German-Spanish relations are close and friendly. At the beginning of 2024, there were almost 200,000 Spanish nationals living in Germany and more than 120,000 German nationals living permanently in Spain.
Germany is Spain’s second most important export market. Conversely, Spain with all its islands is a very popular holiday destination for Germans.

If your product catalogues, manuals, technical documentation or company brochures also need to be published in Spanish, our DTP professionals will be happy to help. We work with all standard DTP and graphics programmes and can create print-ready data in a layout programme (InDesign etc.) or as a print-ready PDF on request.
It is important to note the special features of the Spanish language in foreign language typesetting. During DTP and final proofreading, our graphic designers, Spanish translators and Spanish proofreaders check, for example, that accents and special characters such as „ñ“ are displayed correctly.
The length factor must also be taken into account for German-Spanish translations. Spanish texts are generally longer than German texts. Our graphic designers ensure that the Spanish texts are displayed correctly and in full and that the layout is retained in the final Spanish file.
