The Polish language
Polish is a West Slavic language and the official language of Poland. It is actively spoken by around 50 million people and is one of the 24 official languages of the European Union since 2004. It is very similar to the Czech, Slovak and Ukrainian languages.
Polish uses the Latin alphabet but has the following letters with diacritical marks in addition: Ą, Ć, Ę, Ł, Ń, Ó, Ś, Ź and Ż.
Diacritical marks are dashes, dots, arcs, tick marks or circles that are added to a letter. They indicate a different pronunciation or emphasis of the letter.
Polish pronunciation is generally difficult for non-native speakers, as there are some language-specific sounds, e.g. the „ł“ (similar to an English „w“) and „ń“ (similar to a „ny„). The many consonant clusters (sequence of several consonants without vowels in between) are an additional obstacle.
There are various regional dialects in the Polish language, which differ in pronunciation and vocabulary, making the language very diverse.
Poland has been a member of the European Union since 2004. After joining the EU, Poland experienced strong economic growth which led to an increase in the standard of living. Today, Germany is an important trading partner for Poland and the two countries work closely together in the areas of business, the environment and security.
There is also a lively cultural exchange between Poland and Germany. This is promoted by various initiatives, scholarships and exchange programmes.
